Member of the indigenous Polynesian people of
New Zealand, who numbered 294,200 in 1986,
about 10% of the total population. In recent
years there has been increased Maori
consciousness, and a demand for official
status for the Maori language and review of
the Waitangi Treaty of 1840 (under which the
Maoris surrendered their lands to British
sovereignty). The Maori Unity
Movement/Kotahitanga was founded 1983 by Eva
Rickard. The Maoris claim 70% of the
country's land, and have secured a ruling
that the fishing grounds of the far north
belong solely to local tribes.
